Sony sells 50 million PSPs worldwide

Sony announced on Friday that they have sold a total of 50 million units of their PSP handheld portable console worldwide.

This landmark number includes all PSP-1000, 2000 and 3000 series sold since the consoles debut in December 2004.

The PlayStation Portable opened up an entirely new gaming market at the time, by offering 3D-CG games as well as giving users the ability to view high resolution video images, to enjoy digital entertainment and online gaming anytime, anywhere.

The number of games too has continued to grow over the years with more than 2,000 titles currently available worldwide, with 200 million units sold to date.

Since its launch 4 years ago, Sony has continued to upgrade the PSP's features from the well designed PSP-1000 to its slim and light predecessor, the PSP-2000, which expanded the joy of the PSP from the entertainment arena to the area of communication.

In October 2008, Sony introduced the latest model of the series, the PSP-3000, which features an advanced high contrast LCD and a built-in microphone, while maintaining the design and look of the PSP-2000.
